The Monday Thought
Life won.
After nearly fifty years, the Supreme Court of the United States finally agreed with what legal scholars have been saying for decades; that the Constitution does not contain a right to abortion.
What this shows is the fact that the battles worth fighting are worth continuing to fight. It took 49 years, five months, and two days for Roe v. Wade to be overturned. We can’t give up on our core issues just because the work is going to be hard.
I talked more about this here.
A lot of my thoughts go to what I talked about in this very space seven months ago. What comes after Roe?
It will no longer be good enough for Republicans who say they are pro-life to say so on the basis that they are against abortion. It is time for Republicans who are truly pro-life to expound upon what that means. To be pro-life is to be pro-family, and it will be time to finally talk about the policies supported by pro-life activists and politicians that are far beyond abortion.
This does not mean that the government will need to be involved in these things. There is already plenty of private sector and non-profit infrastructure to provide support for women, babies, and families in need. We can start by asking more pro-life activists to vote with their wallets and actually support those charities with your charitable giving…..
……There are several existing policies that support families that Republicans and pro-life activists generally support. It is pro-family to want lower taxes on workers. It is pro-family to want lower taxes on businesses that employ workers. It is is pro-family to want lower sales taxes that so that the goods your family needs aren’t so expensive. It is pro-family to oppose tariffs that raise the goods of big ticket items your family needs. It is pro-family to keep government out of health care and let parents make decisions for their kids. It is pro-family to promote changes in health care laws that streamline the ability to purchase coverage across state lines.
All of those things continue today. But Republicans in Congress don’t seem too interested in trying to legislate them, instead choosing to fight other battles.1 But at some point, Congressional Republicans will have to realize that what they have campaigned on in the past isn’t good enough anymore. It isn’t enough to promise to vote for judges that will “overturn Roe”. It isn’t good enough to say “I’m pro-life” anymore.
After 49 years of only having to make cursory promises toward the pro-life movement, Republicans are going to have to stop being showhorses and become workhorses for life instead. Let’s see who can make it happen.
Democrats have been pretty bad on this as well. If Democrats were smart they would have codified Roe into law sometime in the last 49 years. But they didn’t. Which is fortunate for us and hundreds of thousands of unborn children, not so fortunate for them.
