American Eats: Minnesota. The Spam Museum
Look, when I went to the Spam Museum in 2010, there was no food there. There was nothing to eat at the museum.
BUT IT WAS THE SPAM MUSEUM.
The Spam Museum was just that. It was about Spam. Located in Spam’s hometown of Austin (home of the Hormel Company), the museum went through the entire history of Spam, its start in the war, how it became popular around the world, ways to cook Spam, and Spam’s marketing throughout the years.
I am not particularly a fan of Spam. But that did not stop me from thoroughly enjoying the Museum.
Since I was there in 2010, the museum has moved to newer digs in downtown Austin. I intend to go back if I’m ever out that way again. You don’t really go to Austin by mistake; you either go there on purpose or go there because you’re driving across Minnesota on Interstate 90. But if you ever find yourself driving to Mount Rushmore or something, it is a good place to stop and get some insights into one of the more….famous foods you’ll hear about.
