Change Needed in Montgomery GOP
For the sake of all Maryland Republicans, Maryland's largest county needs new party leadership
Montgomery County Republican Chairman Reardon “Sully: Sullivan took office about a year ago. Sullivan promised among other things that hewas going to grow the number of registered Republicans in Montgomery County. He said the previous administrations prior to him had been sleeping behind the wheel. Sullivan mentioned that it has been 16 years since Montgomery County elected a Republican, and how he was going to take the Montgomery County Republican Party out of the echo chambers and bring on new republicans.
Well that was a year ago.
Today. Montgomery County Voter registration has fallen below 100,000 registered Republicans. A year ago, the number was 115,000. Since Sullivan has been chairman Montgomery County has yet to hold a Lincoln Day Dinner or County Convention. Last years fundraising was a Summer Cookout, scheduled only after the success of a similar event in Anne Arundel County.
Instead of coming up with tangible solutions like voter registration efforts, Sullivan wasted almost six months on bylaws changes. Instead of recruiting candidates he spent time, fighting the Maryland GOP’s much needed moral turpitude bylaws resolution. He had his acolytes suggest that Republicans elected to Central Committees should be allowed to donate to Democrats. Not surprising since Sullivan has been a donor to Montgomery County Democrats, among them Ike Leggett, Phil Andrews, former Delegate Saqib Ali, and the Obama-Biden campaign.
Sullivan’s first term has been a complete failure in a word everything from their digital presence to fundraising. If you go to the the county party website, you’ll see the most recent story is from August 2021
If you scroll down to their events page, it doesn’t get any better
The party under Sullivan was also one of several groups who had their eyes off the prize during redistricting, by promoting national issues at the expense of mobilizing Republicans against the Democrats radical gerrymandering.
It is sad to see once a great county which, a former County of the Year, famous for their high quality Lincoln Day and Reagan Day, fall into disrepair. Under Sullivan the Montgomery County Republican Party has taken a tremendous step backwards, which is a problem for electing our gubernatorial candidate this fall.
My understanding is that Sullivan is running for re-election unopposed likely because no one wants to take over the party in an election year in its current state. Members of the Montgomery County Central Committee would be wise, for the sake of all Maryland Republicans, to find a better choice.
I am most definitely not a Republican, but I also don't like living in a one-party County. I would like to see a more vital Republican Party as well as third parties.
