CPAC Turns Its Back on Free Speech
“We’re gonna go a bit Hungarian” doesn't make the point Matt Schlapp thinks it does
I’ve been covering the debasing of CPAC for years, from blasphemy to idiotic speakers and beyond.
Just when you think it can’t get any worse, it does. American Conservative Union President Matt Schlapp took some time away from defending himself from sexual harassment allegations to drop this bomb on Steve Bannon’s dumpster fire of a show.

It’s a bit ironic from the “America Uncanceled” People…..
What an absolute dumpster fire of a statement that is.
“We’re gonna go a bit Hungarian” on them speaks volumes about the Trump right’s idiotic love affair with Hungarian Dictator Viktor Orbán.
Banning certain media outlets belies what’s left of the illusion that the Trump wing of the GOP supports free speech and the free exchange of ideas.
It also shows how much Matt Schlapp has regressed as a political thinker. Most people planning events and trying to influence policy want as many eyeballs on their event and product as possible. I know that for every event that I’ve ever organized I’ve credentialed anybody who asked to be credentialed And while I understand that there are some media outlets just looking for a free ride into the event to try and make a spectacle of themselves, what credentials does Matt Schlapp have to determine who is a journalist and who is not?
Is the plan really to only credential talk radio stations, Fox News, OAN, Newsmax, and other Trump wing voices that get little publicity and little attention? Because that will not have the effect that Schalpp thinks it will.
This is just another continued slide down the slippery slope of irrelevancy for a once great event. I have been credentialed to CPAC multiple times when the event has been held in Washington. But The Duckpin will not be among those seeking a media credential for this year’s event. They can have their little dumpster fire on the Potomac without me covering it on-site.
