Dan Cox took some time off from sniffing Doug Mastriano’s jock to file for Congress with the Federal Election Commission today.
A bot first reported the news on Twitter. Cox had not yet filed with the Maryland State Board of Elections as of press time.
Cox likely filed his candidacy so he could make a formal announcement on the 4th of July, as he did his doomed candidacy for 2022 Governor on July 4th, 2021.
Dan Cox was, of course, the failed Republican nominee for Governor in 2022 having run a campaign so bad it will serve as a lesson for generations as a case study on how not to win an election.
Cox lost the 6th Congressional District to Wes Moore in 2022 52.4%-44.4%.
Prior to running for Governor, Cox ran for Congress in 2016 in the 8th District. He then lucked into a seat in the Maryland House of Delegates by virtue of being unopposed in the Republican primary and riding Larry Hogan’s coattails into office.
Since then, he’s lost a gubernatorial election, fetched Mastriano’s coffee, tried and failed to get Julie Giordano to give him taxpayer dollars, spread more conspiracies, kissed up to Donald Trump, and has refused to concede defeat in 2022.
Much of what I wrote when he first filed for Governor in 2021 rings true for this race:
Dan Cox is a joke that nobody of consequence takes seriously……His quixotic candidacy will be little more than conspiracy theories and grievance mongering among those who are otherwise disengaged from state politics. But ultimately, Cox’s campaign will accomplish nothing other than help Maryland Democrats.
Other filed Republican candidates in District 6 are two other has-been candidates (Todd Puglisi, and Mariel Roca) and a never-will-be self-important egomaniac (Chris Hyser). Former Delegate Neil Parrott, who has twice before sought the seat, is also publicly exploring a run.
