Dan Cox Underperformed Larry Hogan Everywhere
Fun fact: running competent campaigns is important
A quick analysis of the unofficial returns shows that Republican gubernatorial nominee Dan Cox underperformed Larry Hogan’s 2014 and 2018 results in every county across Maryland.
Looking at statewide data and data in counties for the gubernatorial tickets in 2014, 2018, and 2022, Dan Cox underperformed Larry Hogan in 23 out of 24 counties in 2014 and every county in 2018.
Cox not only underperformed Hogan by double-digits statewide, he also underperformed Hogan by double-digits in 16 of 24 counties in 2014 and 22 of 24 counties in 2018.
Of note, Cox underperformed Hogan’s 2018 performance by 19 percent in 22 percent in Anne Arundel County, 22 percent in Baltimore City, 23 percent in Baltimore County, and 26 percent in Howard County.
Amusingly, Cox also underperformed Hogan’s 2018 total by 18 percent in his home county of Frederick County.
If only there had been a candidate who had won in Maryland twice before who could have served as a good example for how to run a statewide campaign and win in Maryland.
It’s almost like running competent campaigns is important, and that is something we knew Dan Cox and company were incapable of doing all along.
