Democrats Panicking About Barry Glassman
Do Democratic operatives know something the rest of us don't about the Comptroller's race?
The Duckpin endorsed Barry Glassman weeks ago. This week, the Washington Post joined us.
That Post endorsement made something click with Democrats, who are now in absolute freakout mode about Glassman, trying to paint him as an extremist.
Just last night, the Maryland Democratic Party went on a comical offensive against Glassman by trying to paint him as an “extremist.”
Democrats couldn’t even stick to the facts. One of their attack points was that Glassman “voted to defund public schools throughout Maryland.” What is that even supposed to mean? What Glassman actually did was vote against a bill that would allow the Maryland Stadium Authority to build public schools. It was a patently unconstitutional bill to grow the size of government over the will of the people of Maryland.
The fun fact about all of this is that Barry Glassman is running for Comptroller. And while Peter Franchot tried to make the job of Comptroller about everything other than being Comptroller, none of these things have anything to do with the responsibilities of the Comptroller.
Speaking of which, Democrats are so panicked that they trotted out Franchot to narrate a commercial for Brooke Lierman which talked about protecting aborton as if it were somehow part of the Comptroller’s job.
The commercial did manage to gloss over the fact that career politician Brooke Lierman was a champion of raising taxes on the poor through mileage taxes, styrofoam box bans and bag taxes
The irony of all of this is the fact that Democrats are trying to paint Barry Glassman, of all people, as an evil radical extremist. Barry Glassman is the epitome of a happy warrior in politics, one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. The idea that Glassman is on the same level as the far right Trump-wing of the party is so absurd that even your average voter would find it unbelievable.
I have never seen Democrats run a campaign so aggressively against a down-ballot candidate in Maryland that I can remember. Larry Epstein, Gene Zarwell, Anne McCarty, Bill Campbell and Anjali Phukan never got this treatment running for Comptroller. Michael Peroutka is barely getting this treatment in running for Attorney General this year. And yet, Lierman and the Maryland Democrats are throwing everything they have at Barry Glassman.

Do Democratic operatives know something the rest of us don't about the Comptroller's race? Is this race closer than public polling indicates? Because a party that is confident in career politician Brooke Lierman does not act this way.
In 18 days, we’ll find out.
