Enough with this Special Session Stuff
Maryland's left-wing continues to push for a special session. But why?
Left-wing activists in Maryland are obsessed with calling the Maryland General Assembly back to Annapolis for a special session. Right now.
CASA de Maryland shares this statement:
Over 70 Maryland organizations including non-profits, unions, religious organizations, municipalities and others call on Maryland House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones, Senate President Bill Ferguson and members of the Maryland General Assembly to reconvene for a special session. Advocates who are concerned with Governor Larry Hogan’s lack of action on a variety of different pressing issues facing vulnerable Marylanders urge this reconvening as soon as possible.
None of the other 70 organizations are actually listed.
However, CASA de Maryland is echoing the calls for many left-wing Maryland Democrats on social media that the Maryland General Assembly needs to return to Annapolis right now.
What are some of their reasons for this? They want the General Assembly to:
Pass Emergency COVID protections for workers, renters and homeowners;
Pass police accountability, transparency and reform measures;
Pass legislation for a “Fair and accessible General Election”
Override Governor Larry Hogan’s vetoes.
Are any of these issues emergencies? In a word, no. For a few reasons;
Governor Hogan has been effectively managing emergency COVID issues such as rent and mortgage payments by suspending evictions;
Police accountability measures have been brought to the fore before; Maryland Democrats lacked the political will to pass them;
Governor Hogan has been attempting to provide for a fair accessible election, but have been stymied by Democrats who want to force by-mail voting. CASA and their allies no doubt want the General Assembly to pass legislation forcing these voter suppression measures into effect.
There is no time crunch to override the Governor’s vetoes since it will be the first piece of legislative business in January, anyway.
The passage of the vetoes would be among the worst things that could possibly happen right now when you consider hat one of the vetoes Democrats want to override is the disastrous Kirwan Commission plan that will bankrupt the state.
I guess the real question for CASA de Maryland is this: how many lives are you willing to risk to make this happen?
Let’s not forget that the Maryland General Assembly is made up of 188 men and women, many of whom are at high risk of contracting COVID-19. This is an issue I wrote about back in March, when the General Assembly stayed in session far longer than they should have. I said on the very first day of this crisis that the General Assembly should go home immediately. Two days later I wrote about how Governor Hogan should veto every piece of legislation signed during the Emergency. Ten days into this I wrote that legislative leadership was derelict in keeping the session open as long as they did.
Nothing has changed since then. Nothing at all. CASA de Maryland and the groups that (allegedly) signed their request think their agenda trumps public safety, giving no mind to the legislators, legislative staff, Capitol Police officers, custodial staff, legislative analysts or anybody who would need to be put at risk.
How many lives at CASA de Maryland and their (alleged) co-signatories willing to sacrifice in order to pass their left-wing agenda?
Enough to this madness. There is no benefit for anybody to bring the General Assembly back to Annapolis for a Special Session right now. No lives are worth risking to COVID-19 merely for the sake of a political agenda.
What I would like to see is how Maryland leaders will help those working parents (who MUST work to survive) now that fall schooling is virtual. How how are these parents going to get thru this unmanageable and seriously real dilemma and what are our lawmakers doing to help?
