Like a Fart in the Wind, there's no more Bread and Roses
A party nobody wanted goes the way of the dodo.
Most people probably forgot the Bread and Roses Party existed before they read in the Baltimore Sun this morning that the party was disbanding:
Maryland’s socialist Bread and Roses Party is disbanding, and its founder, Jerome Segal, is launching a run for governor as a Democrat.
Segal said the Bread and Roses Party’s central committee voted to disband and submitted the necessary paperwork to state elections officials this week, ending the group’s brief run as a recognized political party in Maryland.
The Bread and Roses Party disbands having run exactly one candidate for office: Segal as a Presidential candidate in 2020. He received 5,884 votes and finished fifth, behind Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Jo Jorgensen, and Howie Hawkins.
Segal also was on the ballot in Vermont and received 65 votes, finishing in 17th place.
I guess the “50-state organization” didn’t pan out so well.
This entire exercise ends pretty much exactly as I said it would three years ago when the party was announced:
And Maryland, as we have been saying for years, has a middle temperament; it has never been open to radicalized left-wing candidates at the statewide level or in competitive districts, and it has only appeared that way due to hyperpartisan gerrymandering by Maryland Democrats.
The average Maryland voter is not going to sign up for any of what Jealous, Schlakman, or Segal are trying to sell them. Nobody in Maryland wants to to bring the political violence of Venezuela, the bread lines of the old USSR or the police state of Cuba here through a socialist government.
To that end, I salute Jerome Segal for his efforts in getting a party that nobody wants and nobody will elect onto the ballot. It is merely another vehicle for socialists to see that real people don’t want their radical nonsense in office.
The Bread and Roses Party was the answer to a question nobody was asking and, as it turns out, was little more than a Jerome Segal vanity project. Which will continue as Segal now runs for Governor as a Democrat.
But in the abandonment of his own party to run as a Democrat, Segal said something rather poignant:
“The Democratic Party has moved so far to the left that many things we argued for at the beginning that were viewed as pie-eyed utopianism … now are mainstream Democratic Party positions,” Segal said. “So much more can be done inside the party.”
Though Segal’s own party failed because its so far outside of the mainstream of what voters what, he acknowledges that his new/old party, the Democratic Party, has basically adopted the Bread and Roses Platform. Segal is comfortable in the Democratic Party now because the Democratic Party in Maryland has been so radicalized in the direction of socialism. His vanity efforts can be better executed there than in another group.
So long Bread and Roses Party. Nobody will ever remember you existed.
Brian - Ben Jealous literally ran a venture capital company. That’s a socialist to you?
I wanted it. It represents what we need, even if people don't realize it. Yes, Maryland is a "middle" state in which people tend to go along with the establishment.
