On First Day, Moore Made Government Bigger
Moore unnecessarily creates a whole new Cabinet Department
Maryland already has too many cabinet departments, but that didn’t stop Governor Wes Moore from creating a new one on his first day in office.
Moore decreed by Executive Order the creation of the “Department of Service and Civic Innovation.”
To make good on his campaign promise to establish a service-year option for all high school graduates, Moore also signed an executive order establishing the Maryland Department of Service and Civic Innovation.
Existing service programs in various parts of state government would be folded into the new department, and it also will be the home of Moore’s proposed yearlong public service program for high school graduates. Moore will appoint a cabinet secretary to lead the new state agency.
Per Moore’s decree, the Department will do…… a lot.
The establishment of the Department will create a whole new state-level bureaucracy in order just to administer volunteer programs as well as to administer the other massive piece of bureaucracy that Moore wants, the Service-Year Option for high school graduates that will be administered by the state.
The irony of establishing a massive, expensive bureaucracy for something that lean non-profits have been accomplishing for decades should not be lost on us.
But what is the purpose of this? Why does a new cabinet department need to be created to address “Service?”
How Orwellian is it that Service to the State is now deemed to be a cabinet-level department on Education, Transportation, and Natural Resources? Why can’t the work of this Cabinet Department be done by the Non-Profits already doing the work?
Why does Wes Moore think even more state resources should be poured into encouraging people to volunteer?
And what protections will there be to make sure that volunteers aren’t directed solely toward volunteer opportunities that the Moore Adminstration deems “politically appropriate?”
This of course was only Moore’s first day, Government will continue to grow bigger and more bloated over the course of Moore’s four years in office…
