Schifanelli Politicizes Superintendent Search

After decrying politics in public schools, Lt. Governor Candidate Gorana Schifanelli is politicizing the search for a new Superintendent in Queen Anne’s County Public Schools.

In a message posted on Telegram, Schifanelli called for people to encourage “anyone who is hard core conservative” to apply for the vacant post and highlighted now as “the best opportunity for a conservative person.”

Schifanelli’s statement in regards to the position does not match her previous actions and rhetoric.

Schifanelli gained national attention for helping force the previous superintendent Dr. Andrea Kane from the position for making political statements related to the Black Lives Matter movement.

In a June 16 post to the group, according to a screenshot provided to The New York Times, Ms. Schifanelli declared: “Dr. Kane in QAC needs to end her contract and go! People in this group must call and make it loud and clear that the school must remain apolitical and her letter to parents promoting Black Lives Matter is not going to be tolerated”

In April 2021, Schifanelli told the Washington Times:

In addition, Mrs. Schifanelli objected to the lecture from a government worker who she believed should be focused on educating her children rather than broader social issues that her 11-year-old didn’t really understand.

“You shouldn’t be using your microphone to promote your partisan political position as a public employee,” she said. “My kid’s 11. You want to regurgitate a particular political view about police and how they deal with criminal defendants and use my kids as your social justice warriors? The hell you will.”

In her Telegram message, Schifanelli boasted about how she was the campaign manager for the winning slate of candidates elected to the Board of Education in November 2020.

Additionally Schifanelli’s husband, Board of Education member Marc Schifanelli, recently proposed a resolution that would keep politics out of educational materials:

Schifanelli’s first resolution sought a commitment from the Board of Education to refuse support for any politically leaning or partisan-based materials — specifically mentioning resources that allude to social justice platforms like racial justice and economic justice, or to socioeconomic concepts like collectivism.

Schifanelli is an immigration lawyer whose 2020 campaign for the board was based on keeping “politics out of the classroom.”

“Activism is not education,” Schifanelli said. “The purpose of educating youth is to help them realize their fullest potential in life as both individuals and as members of the larger community ... to do that, students need to learn to think logically and to think for themselves and to question their conclusions. This is a universal proposition, no matter what one’s background.”

That resolution was dismissed as being “political.”

So after successfully forcing out one Queen Anne’s County School Superintendent for being too political, Gordana Schifanelli now wants to hire a new Queen Anne’s County School Superintendent based solely on their politics.

Not that it’s the most hypocritical thing that Schifanelli has ever done…
