State-Level Unions Trying to Buy Off Frederick County
What does county government have to do with abortion? Nothing. But that's not stopping two Democratic-aligned unions from pushing the issue in the County Executive's Race.
Abortion is, at this juncture, a state-level issue. Abortion is, unfortunately, legal in the state of Maryland. Democrats are continuing to drive Maryland further and further to the radical extremes of the abortion issue, as we have written extensively about here.
Two Democratic state-level unions, however, are trying to shoehorn the issue of abortion into a place it doesn’t belong: a county executive race.
Maryland Matters reports that the Maryland State Education Association and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 24 have launched a PAC and are running this ad:
Funny, I don’t see protecting abortion in the mission statement of either the MSEA or IBEW Local 24. Then again, there is nothing in their mission statements about being slush funds for Democratic operatives or running political interference for desperate Democratic politicians, but here we are.
If I were a unionized electrical worker or a teacher, I would be asking a lot of questions about why $90,000 of union money is being spent on this.
The MSEA/IBEW joint effort is called "Marylanders for Freedom and Opportunity”. An ironic name considering that they are dedicated to ensuring that the unborn have neither the freedom nor opportunity to be born.
The issue again comes back to the county governance though. What does Mike Hough’s votes on abortion have to do with running Frederick County Government? Absolutely nothing. As I wrote about earlier, abortion is sadly legal in Maryland. Nothing that Mike Hough will do at the big desk in Winchester Hall is going to be able to change that. Nor will he be able to influence abortion policy all that much in county government.
If anything, the ad highlights the fact that Mike Hough has a moral compass to protect children and Jessica Fitzwater does not.
What’s more is the fact that, as Maryland Matters notes, the Hough campaign has launched its own ad talking about crime and featuring Governor Larry Hogan.
Crime of course is an issue that county government can address. It’s something that a county executive can focus on, can direct policy on, and can fund. Why aren’t Democrats talking about that?
Mike Hough’s abortion record does not impact working conditions for teachers or for electricians. But as they always do, Maryland’s unions are prioritizing workers and their money for the sake of Democratic politicians. When will Maryland’s workers learn that they can’t trust their unions?
