Surprise! Orioles Tied for League Lead in Uniform Combinations
Birds mixed and match in unusual ways this season
Today Paul Lukas at Uni Watch linked to an invaluable and interesting spreadsheet. Andy Bronson created a spreadsheet that tracked every Major League Baseball team in the regular season by their uniform combination.
Much to my surprise, the Orioles tied for the league lead with the most different uniform combinations this year, with 11.
With four jerseys, three hats, and two sets of pants, it would seem like other teams with a more colorful palate would have worn more different combinations. But the Orioles occasional mixing and matching of hats helped push them over the edge.
The combinations, in order of most games worn were1:
Gray Jersey, Road (Black Panel) Hat, Gray Pants: 54 games (26-28)
White Jersey, Home (White Panel) Hat, White Pants: 53 games (30-23)
Black Jersey, Alternate (O’s) Hat, Gray Pants: 12 games (6-6)
Orange Jersey, Home Hat, White Pants: 12 games (5-7)
Black Jersey, Alternate Hat, White Pants: 11 games (8-3)
Orange Jersey, Road Hat, Gray Pants: 7 games (4-3)
Black Jersey, Road Hat, Gray Pants: 7 games (2-5)
Black Jersey, Home Hat, White Pants: 3 games (1-2)
White Jersey, Road Hat, White Pants: 1 game (0-1)
Orange Jersey, Road Hat, White Pants: 1 game (1-0)
Black Jersey, Road Hat, White Pants: 1 game (0-1)
The only other team that wore 11 combinations? The Houston Astros, who have seven jerseys, three hats and three pairs of pants.
The Orioles will likely add a new jersey set in 2023 or 2024 when they will join the City Connect gimmick program.
It will be interesting to see in future years what
The list was not inclusive of all of the other special gimmick hats MLB foists upon the public every year (i.e. Mothers Day, Camo, etc)
