The Monday Thought
Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin announced on Friday that she is running for Congress, seeking to fill the state's lone US House seat after the death of longtime Rep. Don Young.
Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee in 2008 and a conservative firebrand who helped stoke the anti-establishment sentiment that has engulfed the party since she ran alongside the late Sen. John McCain years ago, said in a statement that she planned to "honor" the nearly five decades Young served in Congress by "offering myself up in the name of service to the state he loved and fought for."
"America is at a tipping point," she said. "As I've watched the far left destroy the country, I knew I had to step up and join the fight."
It’s hard to imagine that Sarah Palin has been in the national spotlight for 14 years now.
There was a time when people were very high on Sarah Palin. There were even people who predicted six months before she was selected that not only would Sarah Palin be John McCain’s running mate, but that Sarah Palin should be John McCain’s running mate.
Alaska Governor Sarah Palin brings a lot of things to a potential national ticket. First off, she already has a record as a reformer. She challenged a Governor of her own party in a competitive primary and defeated him easily. She also brings a different demographic to the ticket. While Senator McCain can easily be portrayed as an old Washington insider, scarred from battles both real and political, Governor Palin will give voters something different. A feeling of vibrancy, of renewal. About as far away from being a Washington insider as you can possibly get. She's so popular, both inside and outside of Alaska, that a Draft Palin for VP movement has existed on the internet for over a year....
...The people of Alaska probably don't want to lose Governor Palin yet, given that she has just started her work as their Governor. However, I'm not sure there are many other choices Senator McCain can make that would energy the base as much as the selection of Governor Palin would. I hope that Senator McCain calls her to serve her country, something she would do admirably
Man, whatever happened the guy who wrote that?
Right. Anyhoo……
Sarah Palin’s political career absolutely peaked on August 29, 2008 when she was selected as McCain’s #2. It has been a steady glide path downhill ever since.
We have seen Palin’s abrupt resignation as Governor of Alaska in her first term, quitting on the people of her state as her national profile rose.
We have seen her become a reality show television star.
We saw her rapping on The Masked Singer.
We have seen her abandon her conservative principles time and time again. Remember, even before she embraced Trump’s statism, she was endorsing Democrats against Republican statewide candidates because she opposed Republican tax cuts.
We have seen her life have one tabloid-style incident after another.
We have seen her attempt to dismantle the free press in courts.
And now, after all of that, with her star the dimmest, she is attempting to take an opportunity and run with it. After all, Don Young served in Congress for fifty years. Statewide Congressional seats almost never come along in Alaska. And she is taking advantage of a 51-candidate primary field and a presumed forthcoming Trump endorsement to at least make the general election.
There was a time when Sarah Palin was a very influential conservative among serious conservatives and Facebook warriors alike. Now, she is merely an avatar for the type of anti-intellectualism that has run rampant throughout the GOP. Instead of being the savior of conservatism, she merely became the prototype for Bozo Republicans like Michele Bachman, like Lauren Boebert, like Marjorie Taylor Greene, like Madison Cawthorn. She was the first of her kind, and now she sees her moment to finally ride triumphantly into Washington on a snowmachine made of establishment tears, or something.
Sarah Palin had her time in the sun. It would be better if she faded off as the sunset. But in the Year of Our Lord 2022, we’re hardly that lucky.
