I am old enough to remember when the GOP said it was the party of family values and you could believe them.
I am old enough to remember when the GOP said it was the party of honesty and integrity and you could believe them.
Boy howdy, those days are long, long gone.
Don’t get me wrong, for a long time there were Republicans in office who talked about family values in public but failed to live by them behind closed doors. Candidates who would talk about family values, but then get arrested for DUI on the way back from their mistresses’ house—that sort of thing.
These days, the loudest voices for “honesty” and “family values” in the Republican Party are capable of neither. Let’s just take a look at some of the highlights from this week alone:
In Texas, Attorney General Ken Paxton was acquitted by the Texas State Senate on impeachment charges brought forth by Republicans in the Texas House of Representatives. Paxton was impeached on charges of corruption that are still under federal investigation. The presiding officer in the impeachment, controversial Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, conveniently, received $3 million in contributions from a pro-Paxton PAC just a few months back. Paxton also faces charges on securities fraud as well.
Meanwhile, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has made family values one of the most important facets of her public identity. The married governor has apparently been engaging in a years-long affair with Trump aide Corey Lewandowski. Explains why she’s been at the top of Trump’s list of potential running mates, doesn’t it.
Meanwhile, perpetual Hot Mess Express Congresswoman Lauren Boebert was allegedly kicked out of the musical “Beetlejuice” for vaping, but it turns out that she was getting to third base
with her boy toy as she goes through a divorce.This is, of course, the kind of moral rot that occurs in a party that praises a thrice-married, twice-divorced ex-President who has constantly cheated on all of his wives, been credibly accused of sexual assault, and is currently facing 91 felony counts in four different states.
The problem is not that these clowns exist in the GOP, or in politics in general. It’s that Trump has conditioned Republican voters to accept this behavior and to attack those who are criticizing the behavior. It is no longer acceptable to just let boorish behavior among Republicans slide, it is now a commandment among these Republicans that such behavior must be defended.
What Paxton did is indefensible. What Noem and Boebert do in their private lives is really none of my business, but when you make family values a core part of your identity you make yourself look like a bumbling idiot. Double so for Boebert, who could easily give out hand jobs in private instead of in a public forum.
The GOP is rotten. And with all the sewage contained with in, the Republican Party desperately needs an enema.

Democrats who are dunking on Boebert for this have no right to talk either when they are complaining about sex images “leaking” from a Congressional candidate who was on a very public website doing very public sex acts for money.
