The Monday Thought
It’s time.
The election is finally here.
It has been a long process. It has been a terrible process. It has been largely a stupid process.
No election in recent memory has been so bereft of discussion about issues.
President Donald Trump has run the most pathetic re-election campaign in American history. Even if he does manage to win the election (a highly unlikely outcome but with a non-zero chance of occurring) it will be through an incompetent, bumbling campaign that did more to hurt the President’s re-election chances himself. It didn’t help putting Brad Parscale in charge. It certainly tempted the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing by naming the re-election campaign apparatus the Death Star.
But the real problem with the President’s campaign was the President. He insisted on turning this campaign into a referendum on nonsense. The President’s obsession with conspiracies, fake news, and “owning the libs” made this already uphill campaign that much more difficult for him. His obsession with undying adulation from his ever-shrinking base of fans is the cause of this.
Joe Biden has run a largely front-porch campaign from his basement, much to the derision of the President and his team. Of course, with Biden having huge polling leads there was no reason why they should step into the fire. Biden and his team are playing to win, not answering ever mano-a-mano challenge from the White House.
Is it enough? Hard to say. A lot of voters aren’t really enthusiastic about Biden, nor are they enthusiastic with the radical left-wing nonsense that may get swept into office with him.
So my final electoral prediction?
Biden wins with 290 electoral votes to Trump’s . I don’t see a scenario where Biden pulls off the upsets in Georgia, Montana, South Carolina or Texas that Democrats are dreaming about. But I also don’t see a way Trump can win Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin either.
A few weeks ago I said;
There is no scientific reason to deviate from that now.
Some other predictions:
Democrats win control of both houses of Congress…..eventually. Because….
Control of the Senate may come down to two U.S. Senate runoff elections in Georgia, both of which won’t take place until January 5th. Two days after the 117th Congress takes office.
Susan Collins will be re-elected in Maine. I know what the polls say. But my gut tells me Collins wins.
Thom Tillis will also be re-elected in North Carolina, mainly because of Cal Cunningham’s issues.
Lindsey Graham will lose to Jamie Harrison in South Carolina.
In Maryland, both Question #1 and Question #2 will pass with flying colors.
All of Maryland’s Congressional delegation will be easily re-elected.
Kim Klacik will underperform her 25.1% vote total from June’s special election.
Time will tell (tomorrow? A week from now? January?) whether all of these predicitons were correct. But I don’t think anybody will cry that the election of 2020 will be in our rearview mirror.
But…..
